Overview
In a landmark initiative aimed at bolstering healthcare services in Cameroon, SmartSana Technologies proudly partnered with GeorgeTown Global Health Office, under the auspices of the TIDE Cameroon program. Launched in October 2019 and funded by the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) through the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the TIDE Program is dedicated to advancing HIV prevention, care, and treatment services across adult and pediatric populations, including both general and key demographics, to achieve and sustain HIV epidemic control.

Project Objectives
In September 2020, SmartSana Technologies was entrusted with a critical mission to enhance the healthcare infrastructure in the East Region of Cameroon by deploying 13 state-of-the-art 3.5 KVA Solar Power Systems across 13 health facilities. This initiative was designed to support the operational needs of the UPPEC Office, powering essential devices such as printers, phones, internet modems, and computers, while primarily ensuring the reliable functioning of centrifuges and refrigeration units crucial for the preservation of HIV blood samples.
Facilities Enhanced
The implementation of solar power systems spanned across diverse health facilities, including:
- HD Messamena
- HD Abong Mbang
- HD Nguelemendouka
- HD Doume
- SFID Mbang
- HD Betarie Oya
- HD Garoua Boulai
- HD Lomie
- HD Batouri
- HD Kette
- CMA Kenzou
- HD Yokadouma
- HD Salapoumbe

Impact and Significance
The deployment of solar power systems marked a significant leap forward in enhancing the healthcare services’ resilience and sustainability in the East Region. By ensuring uninterrupted power supply, SmartSana Technologies contributed to:
- Enhanced HIV Testing and Treatment: Reliable power for centrifuges and refrigeration units has dramatically improved the capacity for HIV blood sample analysis and storage, directly impacting the speed and efficiency of HIV testing and treatment.
- Operational Continuity: The solar systems have ensured that the UPPEC Office’s critical work continues without interruption, fostering better communication, data management, and overall operational efficiency.
- Sustainable Healthcare Solutions: By adopting solar energy, these health facilities have taken a significant step towards sustainability, reducing their carbon footprint and dependence on unreliable grid power or costly fuel generators.
Looking Forward
This project represents just the first phase of a broader initiative to support healthcare services in Cameroon through sustainable energy solutions. SmartSana Technologies remains committed to leveraging renewable energy technologies to empower healthcare facilities, ensuring they have the resources needed to combat HIV effectively and enhance public health outcomes across Cameroon and beyond.
